Coming Attractions: Politics as Usual

in Coming Attractions by

November 2014 theme is “Politics as Usual.” Along with being the title of one of my favorite Jay-Z songs it references the intricacies involved in decision making. Detroit politics historically has involved much decision making. The pulse of Detroiters has always been entwined into politics in my opinion.  I’ve witnessed riot like shouting matches outside of School Board meetings, City Council sessions, and at polling sites. In Detroit, politics are taken seriously.

Family October 2014

in Coming Attractions by

Detroit is Different is such a success. Due to all your support it’s moved forward progressively. I’ve received calls, emails, and comments of appreciation. It’s been so much fun sharing my perspective of Detroit. This is a love I’m eager to develop.

This month’s theme is ‘Family.’ Also it’s my mother’s birthday month. She’s the ultimate Detroiter to me. Born and raised here, Central HS graduate, and committed Detroit advocate.

As a hip-hop artist most of my music is based around my family. I attribute most of my character, decision making, and thought process to my family. My love for hip-hop is directly connected to my cousin Lumumba Reynolds (audio/ video director of Fellowship Chapel in Detroit MI) start as a hip-hop DJ. This month I share some of what I’ve learned from them all along the way from my family.

Coming Attractions: School, Knowledge, & Information of Detroit

in Coming Attractions by

Detroit is Different carries on. September 2014’s theme is ‘School, Knowledge and Information.’ This theme offers me a chance to give a better perspective into why I’ve always felt uncomfortable in class, but have grown an appreciation for it. I believe this will be the most thought provoking month for Detroit is Different thus far. Through the mix of sharing my stories, music, Detroit places, and podcast I explore the role schools play in the lives of young Black males & America.

The Events Based Marketing Campaign of “43 in 67” is carrying on successfully. Through July 23rd and August 2014 I’ve delivered a mix of performances & presentations. I’d like to thank you for the support during this campaign. Click here to take a look at many of the pictures thus far on the campaign.

September will close the “43 in 67” campaign and will be special. I will be traveling to New York for performing and podcasting, live at the Heidelberg Project, giving a storytelling performance at ‘Our Detroit’ Vodka distillery/ tasting bar, and also joining a host of my favorite Detroit performers on stage. Continue to follow “43 in 67”

Taste of Detroit August 2014

in Coming Attractions by

Detroit is Different is gathering a great amount of support thanks to all of you. I’m only 5 months in and am very excited about everything that’s next to come. Please share the website and stories with friends, family, and people you think will appreciate what I’m developing.

The August 2014 theme is ‘Detroit Taste.’ The restaurants, bars, foods, and bakeries throughout Southeast Michigan are world renown. This month’s stories highlight some of my favorite dynamics of that. Also Phil Cooley of Slow’s BBQ will be my featured guest for my Detroit is Different Podcasts that are recorded live at my ‘7 O’Clock Saturday Stories.’

Also in July I began my artistic campaign “43 in 67.” “43 in 67” is an artistic venture in which I’m performing a series of 43 presentations in 67 days. The title of the campaign is inspired by the Detroit uprisings of 1943 and 1967.

“Dear Summer, I know you gone miss me/ For we been together like Nike Airs and crisp tees” Jay – Z Dear Summer

Thank you all for the response and love. Detroit is Different thus far is being encouraged by you all. I’ve gathered more support and appreciate it.

The July 2014 theme is ‘Summer.’ I’m going to share more music, stories, and places that have captured a Detroit Summer (shout out to Jenny Lee and the students at Detroit Summer!).

Also in July I begin my artistic campaign “43 in 67.” “43 in 67” is an artistic venture in which I will perform a series of 43 presentations in 67 days. The title of the campaign is inspired by the Detroit uprisings of 1943 and 1967.

The ’43 in 67’ campaign will start Wednesday, July 23, and close Saturday, September 27.The starting event is still to be determined. The closing event will be my theatrical-style Detroit narrative ‘If Detroit were Heaven.’ This will be held at the 5e Hip-hop Art Gallery in the First Unitarian-Universalist Church of Detroit located at 4605 Cass Ave. in Detroit’s Wayne State University district.  The gallery is an alternative multidisciplinary arts organization that presents and supports contemporary artists and their work.

My goal is to appear at a diverse collective of events to reach an expansive, intergenerational audience. Strategically, I will develop a social media campaign gathering email addresses, Facebook friendships, and Instagram, and Twitter followers. This social media campaign will share a collective of pictures and messages telling the story of the ’43 in 67’ campaign, including its historical framing.

I’ve selected three songs to perform throughout the ’43 in 67’ campaign:

  1. “If Detroit were Heaven,” an imaginative take on the people, places, and things that I feel would create the setting for Detroit if it were Heaven. This song makes reference to many of Detroit’s strong Black Power political and social figures prominent throughout the 1970s to 1990s.
  1. “It’s So Fresh,” is about my relationship with my maternal grandmother, women of my family, and older cousins. The song is told from my childhood perspective.
  1. “This is it What!” is about a hip-hop, word play-based song regarding my beliefs on metaphysical philosophy.

This month’s theme is ‘Detroit Worldwide.’ For over 300 years Detroit has had a mix of impacts from the world. America’s most densely populated place for Arab Americans is here in Dearborn MI. The Polish and Bengali presence in Hamtramck MI is a world to it’s own. Detroit is Different (pun intended) because we make up a very dynamic mix of cultural, social, and experiential backgrounds.

Connected to this very subject is the Cinetopia International Film Festival that I will be presenting at this week. Cinetopia is an international film festival screening 110 films between Detroit and Ann Arbor from Wednesday June 4 through Saturday June 8, 2014. I share the unique connections my songs have to my relationships with my father Greg Frazier CPA, Attorney Milton Henry (RIP), my Grandmother Mary Lee Brown (RIP), and the co-founder of Focus :HOPE Eleanor Josaitis (RIP).

This will be at 5 eLement Hip-hop Art Gallery located at 4605 Cass Ave Detroit MI 48201 (inside the First Unitarian Church enter through Red Door located off Forrest Ave).

Detroit is Different is a success. One month in, and I’ve received calls, emails, and comments of appreciation. It’s been so much fun sharing my perspective of Detroit. This is a love I’m eager to develop.

This month’s theme is ‘I Love Music.’ Often I feel like my life is a movie, and a mix of popular music genres are the score (Carlos Santana, Ice T, Carly Simon, Team Eastside, Nas, and a host of others. As I’m typing this, I’m playing DOC’s ‘Blow Your Mind,’ thinking his 2nd verse has a classic rhyme pattern).

As a hip-hop artist I’ve learned many lessons. I attribute some of my attitude to the nature in which I hear, create, and perform hip-hop. In my journey I’ve connected with a host of musicians, producers, promoters, and enthusiasts in Detroit. This month I share some of what I’ve learned from them all along the way.

I believe that Truth is stranger than fiction. My Detroit story is a testament to that. I’m blessed to share relationships with a mix of people that collectively love Detroit for many reasons. Now I’m driven to tell my Detroit story.

I’m embarking on an experiential art campaign titled ‘If Detroit were Heaven.’ In honor of our relationship I am humbly asking you to join this experience. As an artist and Detroiter I gathered significant notoriety for my ‘Teddy Bears tied Up to Trees,’ song. That song addressed the loss children’s lives throughout Detroit. In performing and exposing the record, I grew strained. I gained more of a public image, painting a darker image of Detroit. This led me to write the song and build the campaign for ‘If Detroit were Heaven.’

The ‘If Detroit were Heaven,’ song and campaign will expose, promote and share the interconnected creativity, cultures and relationships Detroiters have. This campaign will be led through the ‘Detroit is Different,’ blog. This is the inaugural post for ‘Detroit is Different.’
